As the question of how to make Europe competitive remains front and centre in the EU’s political agenda, this week EUA published a new position paper that proposes a partnership for competitiveness. In this publication, EUA outlines several ways in which the EU can foster the right conditions to place research, innovation, education and skills at the heart of its economy, including by providing citizens across Europe with the education, skills and competencies that they need.
These discussions are closely linked to the future of EU programmes that are highly important for universities, not least the successor to Horizon Europe. Earlier this month, EUA welcomed member states’ adoption of the Warsaw Declaration and a European Parliament report that both call for a stand-alone FP10.
EUA has also recently published the first of three reports from our 2024 Learning & Teaching Thematic Peer Groups, on ‘Learning and teaching to empower students’. This final report from a group of nine participating universities outlines various challenges and benefits associated with student empowerment and includes practical examples of what universities can do to support it.
Registrations are now open for the 2025 EUA AI Conference. Join us online on 22-23 May to explore how universities are shaping the era of artificial intelligence, as leaders and practitioners from EUA member universities across Europe present their insights and innovative practices. Also on EUA’s event calendar, you can now sign up for a webinar on how EUA’s Institutional Evaluation Programme can enhance your university’s change management and strategic leadership, or apply to join a masterclass on advanced staff development at Utrecht University (the Netherlands) in May, as part of the STAFF-DEV project.
Looking ahead to later this year, a call for contributions for this year’s European Quality Assurance Forum is now open, while you can still submit a proposal to present at the 2025 EUA-CDE Annual Meeting until 7 April. I also invite you to share information on sustainability and greening at your institution, by answering a newly-launched EUA
survey, which is open until 23 May.
Finally, we are greatly looking forward to connecting with EUA members from across Europe at our upcoming Annual Conference and General Assembly in Riga, Latvia. Although registrations are now closed for these events, I am pleased to share with you information about the four candidates who are standing for election to the Association’s Board on 10 April.
